Dental Bridges:
Restoring Your Smile and
Oral Function
At Northgate Station Dental, we understand the importance of a complete and healthy smile. Missing teeth can affect your ability to chew, speak, and smile confidently. One of the effective solutions we offer to replace missing teeth and restore your smile is a dental bridge.
What is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth by "bridging" the gap between two healthy teeth or dental implants. The bridge is anchored in place by crowns on the adjacent teeth, known as abutment teeth, with a false tooth or teeth, called pontics, filling the gap. Dental bridges are custom-made to match the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth, providing a seamless and functional solution for missing teeth.
Why Choose a Dental Bridge?
Dental bridges offer several benefits, making them an excellent option for many patients:
Restores Functionality: Dental bridges restore your ability to chew and speak properly, which can be affected by missing teeth.
Enhances Appearance: By filling in the gaps left by missing teeth, dental bridges help maintain the natural shape of your face and improve your smile's appearance.
Prevents Teeth Shifting: A dental bridge helps keep your remaining teeth from shifting out of place, which can cause bite problems and additional dental issues.
Long-Lasting Solution: With proper care and maintenance, dental bridges can last many years, providing a durable and reliable tooth replacement option.
FAQs
-
Initial Consultation and Assessment: During your first visit, Dr. Muecke will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your oral health, discuss your goals and needs, and determine if a zirconia bridge is the right solution for you. X-rays and impressions may be taken to assess the condition of your teeth and gums.
Tooth Preparation: If you are receiving a traditional or cantilever zirconia bridge, the abutment teeth (the teeth on either side of the gap) will be prepared by removing a small amount of enamel to create space for the crowns that will anchor the bridge in place.
Impressions or 3D Scanning: Impressions of your prepared teeth are taken, or a 3D scan is performed to create a precise model of your mouth. These impressions or scans are sent to a dental lab where skilled technicians fabricate your custom zirconia bridge.
Temporary Bridge: While your custom zirconia bridge is being crafted, a temporary bridge is placed over your prepared teeth to protect them and maintain function.
Fitting and Placement: Once your custom zirconia bridge is ready, Dr. Muecke will remove the temporary bridge and fit the permanent one. The bridge will be carefully adjusted to ensure a comfortable fit and natural appearance. It is then securely bonded to your abutment teeth or implants, restoring your smile and bite.

Caring for Your Dental Bridge
To ensure the longevity of your zirconia bridge and maintain your overall oral health, follow these care tips:
Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss daily, especially around the bridge and under the pontic, to prevent plaque buildup and gum disease.
Use a Dental Floss Threader: A floss threader can help you clean under the bridge and between the pontic and gums, ensuring all areas are properly cleaned.
Regular Dental Check-ups: Schedule regular visits to Northgate Station Dental for professional cleanings and exams to ensure your bridge and overall oral health are maintained.
Avoid Hard Foods: Although zirconia bridges are very strong, it’s best to avoid chewing on hard objects like ice or using your teeth to open packages to prevent any damage.
