FAQ

The following are the answers to some of the more common questions regarding services provided by Northgate Station Comprehensive Dentistry. If you don’t see the answer to your question below, feel free to contact our offices at the number below.

What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a permanent cap placed over an existing tooth (or portion of tooth) to protect as much of the natural tooth as possible. A crown is recommended when a tooth becomes fractured or broken, or experiences extensive decay. Dental crowns can be made from porcelain (usually fused to metal), ceramic, gold or non-precious metals. When properly placed by an experienced dental professional, a crown can be made to look and feel like your natural tooth, and will last for many years with proper care.

What is a Veneer?
A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain that is permanently bonded to the front of your tooth. Veneers are typically used to improve the aesthetic of your smile, and are frequently used on multiple teeth. If you are unhappy with the alignment, color or form of your teeth, you may be a candidate for veneers.

What is an Inlay?
An inlay is a porcelain or ceramic material that is bonded to the tooth in place of defective and unsightly fillings to add strength and beauty to the tooth. Inlays are recommended when a cavity is too large for a filling, or to replace an existing old filling. Inlays are beneficial because they can last longer than a traditional filling, plus they look like part of the natural tooth.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

If you are missing one or more teeth, are unhappy with your smile or dissatisfied with your dentures, you may be a candidate for dental implants. Implants are a permanent replacement for your natural teeth and can improve your smile greatly, and very few medical conditions would disqualify you from being a candidate. The dental team at Northgate Station Comprehensive Dentistry can conduct a thorough evaluation of your medical and oral health, including a 3-D scan of your teeth and jaw, to determine your eligibility for implants.

What is a Composite Resin Filing?
A composite resin (plastic white) filling is an excellent alternative to traditional amalgam fillings (which contain liquid mercury), helping to support and hold the tooth together as opposed to just “filling the gap,” making the tooth less likely to fracture. Also, composite resin can be color matched to your tooth so the filling is virtually invisible.

Is tooth whitening an option for me?
Tooth whitening is a process that lightens discolored enamel and dentin on the tooth. This process is safe for your teeth when applied by a qualified dental professional and can greatly improve your smile. Almost everyone can benefit from tooth whitening.
